Austin, we got a problem: help for local animals to be cut off

Austin, Texas has turned into a megaplex and has the overwhelming animal problems to show for it. Until now, the communities of Cedar Park, Bee Caves, Westlake, Lakeway, Lago Vista and Sunset Valley have been able to rely on the city of Austin for assistance with stray animal issues and wildlife.

Recently, the director of Austin Animal Services, Abigail Smith has issued a statement that the city of Austin will no longer come to the aid of these smaller less-endowed communities and in fact, will charge a large fee to help with animal related issues.

According to Forbes Magazine, Austin is ranked "among the top cities in the world in 2011 along with two other U.S. metros based on their business-friendliness, affordability and attractiveness to 'millenials' starting and growing their families later this decade."

"People are flocking to Austin to take advantage of companies hiring and the city’s cool reputation. The metro boasts a net migration rate that is the third fastest in the country over the past five years."

That prediction has been proved to be more than true with huge onslaught making Austin, Texas their new home. Austin-based economist Mark Sprague stated 'approximately 158 people were moving to Austin daily! That's 40 some odd families...and their pets.

Many of these incoming families and their dogs will be settling in some of the neighborhoods such as Cedar Park, Westlake, Lago Vista and Sunset Valley which have been duly warned the city of Austin animal control services will only be available at a large cost.

Austin, Texas, known for being one of the most up and coming desirable places to hang your hat, is becoming something other than the city which attracted so many people way too quickly. The huge condominiums alone have altered what was once a unique skyline and now has no resemblance to which was once a true original.

The promise of 'live music every night, movie theaters that sell whiskey, a world-class university' and some of the most mind-boggling terrain in the world with low cost living expenses has placed Austin as '11th largest U.S. city, according to latest Census Bureau estimate.'

What has happened is a spill off of the overwhelming pet problem. Austin Animal Center's new facility is nearly always at capacity. According to Austin Chronicle, "demands of maintaining no-kill status for 17 months have resulted in Animal Services struggling to keep two undersized and overcapacity shelter up and running with the money and manpower needed for one."

This leads to the glaring question, why should the animals in these little communities be punished due to the huge growth enjoyed by the city of Austin? Certainly planners made preparations in transit, energy, utilities, education and other areas of concern. Did they forget about the animals. Kind of looks that way.

Did they assume when Town Lake Shelter was disassembled and the new smaller shelter was constructed way across town on the east side that everyone would forget and the overwhelming animal problem would just go away?
The animal problem is worse than ever with rescue groups struggling to take on more than they can handle to keep animals from being euthanized and allow Austin Animals Services and the group Austin Pets Alive to maintain Austin's no-kill status. And now, these over-stressed rescue groups will take on even more animals to help these little communities without benefit of staff, equipment, funding, transportation and facilities to house the many animals that are showing up not only in Austin, but in Cedar Park, in Sunset Valley, in Westlake Hills, in Lago Vista, in Lakeway and other tiny bedroom communities who didn't ask for this huge growth and who certainly aren't enjoying the benefits.

One sage animal lover says, "Lets talk about the poor rescue groups who now will be more overwhelmed with more calls and more animals because they will be killed after a holding period of three days! My god, I hope your dog does not get out! The rescue groups do everything they can just to survive and Austin now decides to be better then everyone else because of the number game. How many animals can you give away for free game. How many attack the people or their pets Austin gives away because They did not do a behavior assessment, I bet a lot. It's about saving them right?"

Something needs to be done. As the right planning wasn't put into place by the those planners being paid to plan, the job seems to have fallen into the laps of those who aren't pulling down a paycheck or receiving huge grants and funding to care for the overflow of animals when those 158 people and their pets move to Austin each day.

Shelter kills dog 10 minutes after rescue video

Bronx killed for nothing at San Bernadino City Shelter

Animal advocates are up in arms over the killing at San Bernadino City Shelter.

From only one rescuer:

Bronx...killed for nothing at San Bernadino City Shelter
"I am shocked, disgusted and saddened by the treatment of the animals at the SB City Shelter. Why are you not treating the animals that are sick?  What is happening is against the law and I dont know how you can sleep at night knowing that you are not doing all you can for these animals. Why do you work in a shelter? This job should be for people with compassion and who actually care about the lives that are in their hands."

Letter after letter has been written to the administrators of San Bernadino City Shelter, but according to concerned citizens, they're pleas for humane treatment and adherence to California law are falling on deaf ears.

From a rescuer:

"Yesterday, 7/25/2013 I was in the shelter lobby and witnessed a man surrendering his one year old Doberman and Chocolate Labrador mix. I sat down and visited with the dog. He let me pet him and sat nicely. The owner told me the reason he had to give him up was because he had a 1 year old child and Bronx was too energetic for him. He specifically says in the video “he’s a good dog”. After I took the video and photos of Bronx, I had to head back to work. When I got home to post the dogs I photograph that day, I could not find Bronx on Petharbor.com."

"This morning, 7/26/13 I called the shelter to get Bronx’s ID number so that I could post him for networking. I was given the ID number A450802. When I asked Anita Sanchez for his due out date, she said “well if he was a stray his due out date would have been 8/1, but he was an owner turn in that requested that his dog be euthanized for aggression”. I told her if the staff euthanized Bronx they were in violation of the law."

"She yelled, you need to go read the law again and hung up on me. You really need to keep her from speaking to the public."

In response, this citizen and animal rescuer wrote Chief Robert Handy of San Bernadino City Police Department:

"Chief Handy,

According to the outcome list I received today, your staff killed this owner surrender on 10 minutes after I took the video of him! That is 71 hours 50 minutes before he was available for euthanasia. I have NOT received a response.

Which supervisor approved for him to be killed? They need to be schooled on the current laws. Your facility did NOT have a history of vicious or dangerous behavior documented for ID number A450802, he should have been held for 72 hours.

His death is a direct violation of the California Food and Agriculture code section 31754 (a).

Katie at San Bernadino City Shelter...sick and untreated

These good people care about animals. With no city or country funding, no huge grants or resources, a few concerned citizens are begging to save the lives of those animals in the jurisdiction of San Bernadino City. They are asking simply that the shelter obey California law in regards to animals in its care.

One final and desperate plea:

"You also wrote "As I have shared with others, I invite you to come to our shelter and volunteer your time or help us with donations. Where are you Captain King? Where is Chief Handy? I am there everyday. In the 11 months I have been visiting your shelter, I have NEVER seen Chief Handy and I have seen you 3 times. (One of the times you came down specifically to remove me from the shelter for feeding an emaciated dog a treat. See video here for why Captain King drove to the shelter to remove me, when he has the highest crime rate around! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGSJtSB9zs4)."

Alexa – ID# A447860 Sent to General for spay on 6/17, died at general on 6/24."
"Chief Handy seems to think that I walk around looking for violations in order to photograph them. I do not have to, I come across them during my visit with the dogs.

Anyone can just walk around any time of the day or week and you can openly find sick animals and animals without water. I am there for 30 minutes on my lunch break, I cannot imagine what I would find if I was actually looking for it and was able to investigate.

Your shelter is falling apart, I understand you will be getting a new facility in the next year or so…but what about the improvements that are needed now? What improvements have you made to the shelter recently?

The city of San Bernardino is paid a 15% “shelter improvement fee” from 3 of the 4 cities it is contracted with. Colton pays $30,973 a year. Fontana pays $86,787 and Loma Linda pay $18,839 a year for animal shelter improvements. That is $136,599 per year. Where is that money going? It certainly is not going into improving the cities shelter. That may be something else that needs to be audited and investigated."

Please leave your comments and suggestions to help other animals at this shelter. Let these good people know they are not alone. Bronx died for nothing as have other innocent animals at San Bernadino City Shelter.

Just another raw deal

Sasha at Martinez shelter
When Sasha was in high kill Martinez shelter way back in early 2010, she had no idea what was in store for her....judging from her picture, she was like, 'Get me outta here! What's a supermodel like me doing in a prison cell?'

Reunion Rescue can't pull them all, but when I saw that picture, I was like, 'get her out of there. We'll figure something out.'

It was touch and go, a couple of inappropriate foster homes and then to our good friend, dogwalker Jeff who always comes through in a pinch and when we're broke...like most of the time.
Russell catching some zzzz's

By pure fortune, my good friend and old neighbor in Pacifica saw another dog on our site and I didn't know about Pearlie Girl with cats...but pitched Sasha...who was on her fourth name, Little Mama by that time. She'd gone from Marla at the shelter, to Taffy by Cindy, then La Reyna which happens to be a bakery in Austin to Jeff's where she started answering to Little Mama...although it was way beneath her dignity and future plans.

Adena and Matt are longtime pit bull advocates as is their incredible son, Reed. Sasha couldn't have

drawn a better home dash castle had she won the lottery for pit bull homes. She immediately became Matt's dog and Adena, Reed and Russell, their good-natured roll with any punch pittie took a back burner.
Sasha and sugar daddy Matt

When Adena started feeding a raw diet, Matt, like most people thought it was going to be too expensive and time consuming, but now, the family is die-hard about feeding their dogs healthy raw organic sources...and have not one, not two, but three robust thriving never sick dogs to show for it.

When Adena accompanied her good friend to pick up a Reunion dog near Bakersfield, Adena saw a
scraggly pup on the kill list. Percy joined the family and was over his tick and flea infestation pronto once introduced to raw diet.

Reed and Adena
The other night, shopping, Adena suggested picking up some canned food 'just in case.' She was met with a big, 'no way!' from Matt, who added, 'I'd rather feed my dogs canned soup than that crap.'

Boy, when things get tough at Reunion...which can be pretty much any day....all I have to do is remember this wonderful family who loves their pit bulls.

Sasha and Percy aren't the only ones who hit the jackpot....Reunion Rescue is very grateful for our good friends and their perfect raw-feeding home of the luckiest pit bulls in the world...and down the road from a real castle.
