If you just believe...the Bakersfield 4

I want to say the Bakersfield bunch was waiting for me today. Maybe it's my wishful thinking or maybe it's for real. I got to Angela and Ruben's with some delicious food donations from Tomlinson's thank you so much! I brought along a box of the tiny Milk Bones, 'cause that's what the girls like. Most especially Cardi B and Sza. Jury's still out with Rza who pretty much sat in her hole and eyeballed me the whole time. She didn't bark as much as usual, though. Poor Apollo tha' Dog! doesn't get the treat thing. I'm never gonna give up though. This is a dog who's never been treated like a dog.

Funny stuff. Cardi B found a black shiny ball in the swimming pool so I threw it just to see what they'd do. All three girls took off after it and when they got there, just stood and stared at the thing. They'll get it. I sense some ball and some frisbee in these girls' future.

And please sign up for the new Reunion Rescue newsletter - organizing to #savelives just like the Bakersfield 4.

They are all so adorable and so precious. I am in love with each one and looking forward to spending my life with them. It will all come together. One step at a time. I'm even giving them nicknames and they haven't even gotten used to their new freedom names yet. I keep calling Apollo tha' Dog Paolo...like in the movie House of Gucci. My favorite favorite character Jared Leto Paolo Paolo Paolo..that accent. We had a good time today and I know Apollo tha' Paolo Dog! thinks I'm crazy. Well..you don't have to be crazy to work here, but.....

And Scott who hasn't even met them yet has given little Cardi B her first nickname...Chaka Kahn Chaka Kahn...yeah, I can see them here in their future. And they will totally consume Scott. He won't know what hit him. These are some adorable dogs. And they are getting more relaxed and learning how good life can be. If you just believe.

Cheeseburgers in Paradise - Day 3 with the Bakersfield 4

Today's update features some of exploits of our four Bakersfield dogs on the road somewhere between Hesperia, California and paradise. They don't seem to mind the road and are getting looser and more relaxed with each mile. Only one problem so far. After that first night when Ruben stopped and got them all a hamburger, they were sold. Now every time he has to slow down, they think it's hamburger time and get all waggly-tailed and excited. I told him they were spoiled for good now.

Dogs amaze me. I'm still carrying a hard grudge against SFACC in San Francisco for the time they nearly killed a dog I was saving, Slappy, when the green volunteer who was trained to handle dogs properly sprayed her down with a firehose and opened up the spay incisions from the surgery she'd only had the day before. Slappy was a wonderful dog and as dogs do, she put that horror behind her with injuries that caused her to endure medical issues for the remainder of her life. She forgave them, but I remember every single bitter moment. When Carl Friedman director and his henchman Kat Brown fired Ann Bennet, the vet tech who demanded Slappy transported to Pets Unlimited for emergency surgery when she found Slappy lying in the floor unresponsive in her filthy San Francisco kennel, blood and intestines everywhere. A true horror story in a town shelter named after St. Francis. And they banned me and Reunion Rescue.

Slappy lived a nice long happy life eating a raw Reunion Rescue diet. She was adopted and a much beloved family member

to Rachel and Mark who witness that evil green volunteer spraying Slappy with the hose. As luck and fate would have it, they moved the family here to Austin and I got to reunite with that beloved Slappy.

But, back to the Bakersfield 4. Dogs move forward. Even the shitty trainers (and I've had a snoot-ful of those) will tell you dogs live in the moment. They honestly do. Like Dorothy, the most impacted of the Bakersfield 4, now called by her Hip Hop name Rza. I like to give all the hard cases a new name to go with their new collar and leash and new home with newfound hope for new beginnings. She was holding back in the car ride that first day, but when Ruben stopped and got them all hamburgers, things began to change. The other three now called Sza, Cardi B and Apollo tha' Dog gobbled theirs up like they were at a backyard BBQ. Rza was not so sure. She growled a little bit when Ruben gently offered the burger to her, but then very carefully she moved out of the crate she shares with either mother or daughter or sister Sza - it's Chinatown, Jake - and sat next to Ruben. She ate her hamburger, probably a first in this dog's life, while gently resting her body against his leg. This, my friends, is a huge breakthrough.

They enjoyed their ride yesterday. Ruben is taking a slower route back home, thank goodness, because he nearly killed himself trying to get to Bakersfield KCAS before they closed for the rest of the weekend last Saturday night. He stops to let them potty every time he hears the slightest whimper or moan. These four have proved to be very well-behaved traveling companions I'm told. They are scheduled to arrive Wednesday morning at the sanctuary where they'll board indefinitely. If I have to go out on the highway street corner with my Reunion Rescue jar to collect their rent, I'll do it. These dogs will never again have to experience anything but love and respect. It's time for them to learn to just be dogs. That is how it works.

And please sign up for the new Reunion Rescue newsletter - organizing to #savelives just like the Bakersfield 4.

Odin...the story of a champion

Roland Tembo Hendel is one of so many who have lost their homes and much else during the northern California fires. This is Odin, his Great Pyrenees and this is his story.

“Even now as I write this, I am crying tears of gratitude and awe at (my dog’s) bravery and devotion."

This is Odin.

He is a hero.

Despite the fire, he never left the goats he was in charge of.

Here’s what Roland Tembo Hendel wrote about his dog:

As many of you know, Ariel, Scott, Stephen, and I lost everything we had in the Tubbs fire that devastated our forest home in Sonoma County earlier this week.

We had minutes to load up the animals and run from the advancing firestorm.

Despite the sounds of exploding propane tanks, twisting metal, and the hot swirling winds, Odin refused to leave our family of 8 bottle-fed rescue goats.

Hours later when we had found relative safety we cried for Odin and our goats.

I was sure I had sentenced them to a horrific and agonizing death.

Days later, when we were able to make it back to the property, we found a burned, battered, and weakened Odin, surrounded by his 8 goats, and several small deer who had come to him for protection and safety.

Odin was weak, and limping, his once thick and beautiful coat singed orange, his whiskers melted.

Since then, Odin has been reunited with his sister Tessa.

He appears to be getting stronger, and his sister's presence will surely help to lift his spirits and take some of the burden off his giant shoulders.

Also the wonderful volunteers at Sonoma County Fairgrounds gave Odin a check-up and said he is in remarkable health given what he’s been through.

He was limping and lying down more often than usual because his poor paw-pads are burned.

But he will make a full recovery.
Tomorrow he gets a shampoo, a grooming, and nice steak.

And with that, we are going to enjoy a pizza and a beer and a good night’s rest.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and for sticking with us through this roller-coaster ride.

—Roland Tembo Hendel

What an an amazing Dog!

God Bless Odin!

William says there's hope for our sad old wold

William was starved nearly to death, dragged behind a truck and thrown on a bar-b-que grill while lit before being dumped in one of the country's most disgusting facilities in Stockton, California.

Today, he's enjoying his life at Reunion Rescue No Kill Refuge. He eats raw fed diet with organic free range chicken and humanely raised beef. He is treated with herbs to calm his anxiety and goes on lovely nature walks along the lake.

When he looks out at the swans floating on the calm Colorado River, William looks like he might be regaining some faith that not all humans are horrible.

Hope is wonderful thing. Some behaviorists have said dogs don't have the ability to 'hope'....to experience emotion, but looking at William in this picture certainly argues that thought.

No matter what might be going on in the stresses of rescue work and the sad stories one encounters on a daily basis, a leash and a walk down by the lake pretty much cure all that ails one...man or dog.

12 dogs of Christmas at Reunion Rescue

LuLu and Nolan...friends for life!
I woke up this morning and went around to see who's been naughty or nice this year. All I saw were nice dogs. Nobody's naughty at Reunion Rescue.

LuLu and Nolan are near perfect and looking for a home together. Nolan's old home was evil to him and he was on his way to Spindletop the day of the raid. Leah Purcell took all his chip in money, but we took him at Reunion Rescue and have gotten Nolan back on his feet. He was very sick.

LuLu was abandoned at daycare, but found her soulmate with Nolan. They are bonded and will only be adopted together, even if it takes forever.
Buster Posey

Buster Posey nearly died at Solano County ACC. After he was found by a kindly Reunion adopter and

Anybody looking for a Great Dane Weimaraner with a little bit of pit bull thrown in? He's lots of fun and not incredibly smart, but is working on getting his G.E.D.
her little boy, he wound up at ACC and was about to be put to sleep.

Reunion stepped up to the plate and now Buster is here safe at Reunion Rescue No Kill Refuge and looking for that forever home.

Vinny
Vinny came from Marin Humane Society. He is an extraordinary dog. Ok, so he's blind, but that doesn't slow Vinny down for a minute. He's what they call a hunka hunka burning love and thinks he is a puppy.

He figured out how to fetch and maneuver himself up and down three flights of stairs in an afternoon! He loves to play ball and will fetch till the cows come home. He's like a big ol' calf!

Vinny is sweet and charming and will make a wonderful companion for some special and very lucky soul.

Little Amber is a butterball and sweeter than honey. She's a victim of horrific abuse. We have no idea how she got that star shaped burn on top of her head, but she is not one to
Amber
dwell on her terrible past.

She was another Spindletop survivor and when we drove to Conroe to get her back from the mass raid and seizure at Spindletop, she was nearly shut down. No one knows what these poor dogs went through at that horrible place.

What we can do is give her lots of treats and love and cuddling and make her life as sweet as she is. Bless Amber and all these wonderful creatures who just want a little love. That's all. And a cookie.

Amber loves food and will eat anything..pineapples, carrots, you name it. So far, we haven't found a food type that isn't Amber's type.

Peanut
Peanut is another Spindletop survivor. I wrote a story about him when he was at Alvin, Texas animal control. Leah Purcell took advantage of his sad plight and pocketed donations raised to save his life.

When we got him, he threw up everything he ate, but I suspected it was due to his trauma. At first, instead of a raw diet, I cooked his chicken and deboned it with cottage cheese and well-cooked rice. Once he settled in, Peanut began to keep his dinner down and joined in with the rest to eat a delicious organic raw meat diet.

Who knows what Peanut suffered while he was at Spindletop, but we can try and change that. He is a perky, happy little boy who loves nothing better than to fetch that ball! He is all about fetch and
BeBe
will go like the Energizer rabbit if a ball's involved.

Everybody loves Peanut. He loves nothing better than to curl up in a little ball with the person he's with. After fetch, of course.

Next is BeBe...she used to be known as Batgirl as she was beaten over the head with a baseball bat before being dumped in Austin at ACC to die.

I wrote a few stories about her before I was threatened at the Examiner. Now I write blogs and pet BeBe. I pulled her as a citizen on my birthday three years ago in April. She went to Spindletop and survived. She was the first one out and has her own little house to live in at Reunion Rescue No Kill.

BeBe loves her orange ball, going on walks and old movies. She watches Turner Classic Movies round the clock on a big tv set.

The next installment will have more dogs...I'm going to get Shadow today!
