Pit Bull Nation

New Pit Bull Nation review...oh, yeah, by me...is that called conflict of interests? I don't think so if your heart's in the right place.

Pit Bull Nation is a new book by Cindy Marabito. Although pit bull is in the title, the book is not just about pit bulls, but a tell-all account of what goes on behind the scenes in some shelters.
Marabito begins the book with a Marley and Me story about a chow chow she found on the east side of Dallas, Texas. That’s where the similarity to a fuzzy warm story ends and the honest searing trip down a dark path begins.
Marabito takes the reader on an unforgettable ride behind the walls of so-called no-kill shelters run by modern day Hitler types and the end of the line for the nation’s unwanted dogs and cats. She shares her experiences with unscrupulous veterinary hospitals bordering on malpractice.
Pit Bull Nation does not always prevail on the dark side. For each pull at the heartstrings, there is a tale of redemption and miracle. It’s no accident that Marabito rescues pit bulls and also not a coincidence her rescue is called Reunion Rescue.
This book shares her knowledge of diet and nutrition, homeopathy and holistic cures for almost every single disease or behavior a pet owner and most rescues encounter. Marabito shares her path of healing and how she learned it's secrets from pit bulls and a Siamese cat.
This book is a must read for any animal lover, but especially for the rescue worker who would like to find out how to feed dogs and cats for twenty five cents a day and treat any malady and most aggression with items from their local Whole Foods Market.
Pit Bull Nation is an honest look at the overwhelming epidemic facing the United States today. With every shelter filled with pit bulls and more waiting to enter them, Marabito shares a solution to the problem in her own voice, her own way.
Pit Bull Nation is available in e-book format or in trade paperback through the website http://www.pitbullnationonline.com

WASHINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA

Sad faced hound dog puppies need saving:

Washington NC: Carol, Goldy and King are scared @ 8 month old Hound mix siblings. They appear to not have been socialized very much and therefore fearful of people. We are hoping they will begine to come out of their shell at the shelter and there was a glimmer of hope when one of the black and tan wagged the tip of his tail a bit for a volunteer. Carol the tan and white pup was the braver one to come closest to eat treats. For more info email the shelter staff at animal.control@co.beaufort.nc.us. Always refer to the petango or ID number! Adoption fee is $65 which includes spay/neuter, p/d shot, bordetella, microchip and deworming. Approved 501c3 Rescues can pull for $15 which includes p/d shot, bordetella, microchip and deworm. Some volunteer assistance for 501c3 rescues. Please refer to ID number when calling or emailing shelter.

***PLEASE NOTE*** We will update as soon as updates are available. This shelter has a very small but very busy staff, so please DO NOT CALL for updates on dogs. If their Petango link is active, then they are still in the facility. While we
welcome interest from all rescue groups, the shelter staff and volunteers CANNOT arrange long-distance transports or boarding. No credit card adoptions or rescues. Must be cash or check.

Adopters must appear in person at shelter to sign adoption paperwork and pay fee, then the dog will be taken to a Beaufort Co. vet for spay/neuter. Rescue groups can pull for $15 but it is your responsibility once the dog leaves the facility to arrange transport and/or boarding.

Help us save lives by walking your own dog

Reunion Rescue is strutting across the nation to save lives .... one dog at a time!

LuLu and Nolan are ready to strut!!
For over 15 years, Reunion Rescue has been saving pit bulls and now has the refuge to prove it. Reunion Rescue operates the only no kill raw feeding holistic refuge for pit bulls in the world. We need help to keep things running.

Each dog costs about $250 a month for upkeep, toys, treats, food, medical, herbal and homeopathic support. Plus, we're trying to buy a van so we can take our beautiful healthy happy pit bulls to events and show the world just how magnificent these former abused dogs are.

We are strutting in Austin, Texas:

http://www.strutyourmutt.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.team&teamID=6334

and in San Francisco, California:

http://www.strutyourmutt.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.team&teamID=6335

Peanut says, 'hey, let's strut!'
Please consider walking your dog to help us save more homeless pets. You can do a virtual walk and ask your friends to help out! Anything helps.

Please join us so there will be no more homeless pets, inAustin, in San Francisco or anywhere else.

Please check out the links and consider walking your pet for Reunion Rescue. We need volunteers to help us walk the dogs and share the news. You can volunteer for Reunion Rescue from anywhere in the world...contact doggirl1@earthlink.net or visit our website http://www.reunionrescue.com and click the Get Involved tab.

Adopt Maximus from Beaumont...he's the 'GREATEST!'

The city of Beaumont Animal Services has gotten behind Maximus and is reaching out for a good home. In today's world, so many unwanted dogs are ending up in shelters, it's very special when a shelter does everything in their power to save a life!

According to the posts on Max's story, "Max's story, as I know it. Can be revised if anyone has anything to add: Mac was initially saved from Irving animal shelter. He was not microchipped at that time, because they do not always chip for rescue pulls. Sometime after that point he had been adopted from RAS, then given away to someone else from there.

I was working at Beaumont Animal Services when he came in, and he was scanned for a chip. No chip. I texted a picture of him to Courtney to see if she recognized him because he sounded similar to a dog she had described to me before, and since he was neutered I took the shot. She let me know that he was Maximus, and called the RAS adopter. they told her they had given him to a friend and didn't want him.

Newer owner was contacted, also did not want him back. RAS did not come to retrieve him at that point. I searched for approx 4mos to find an adopter, and finally did after waiving the adoption fee.
Maximus was most recently found tied to the gate at BAS, adopters were contacted. They claimed he had been stolen and they would come pick him up. They never bothered. Max was adopted last month but returned after a week because the new adopters dog kept attacking him."

Maximus has the sad story so many of today's dogs seem to incur. But....just look at that smile! Maximus is truly evidence of the meaning of his name...the GREATEST! All he needs a stroke of luck.

Reunion Rescue has not had an adoption in ... well, forever? Reunion Rescue will take this dog if we can get a solid Austin foster to help us out until we can free up a space for Maximus.

Email doggirl1@earthlink.net if you'd like to foster Maximus for Reunion.

Please comment and share your thoughts about Maximus below the blog..he could sure use a good friend!!!

Rescue Magic: Carmine's Rescue Story

Back in 2009, a last minute emergency notice came out from West LA shelter. A senior dog called Gio had been redlined and was about to be put down. Besides his age, Gio was sick and blind.

He'd been discovered walking down Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles. Most who walk down this street are shopping for a big Hollywood break, but all Gio got was a temporary cell unit at the shelter.

Several wonderful volunteers put together a video for Gio. He had a lot of people pulling for him, but Gio had run out of luck...and time. Reunion Rescue was full and broke, but what's new? Something about Gio just wouldn't let us hit the delete button, so we started looking for an opportunity.

A notice was put out on Streets of Bakersfield, our volunteer group which transports high risk dogs in California to safe refuge. Angel from Big Dogs Rescue did the first leg and met John McCaulay who carried many, many dogs to safety over the years. We lost John last Memorial Day when he passed away in his home.

A nice couple offered to foster Gio and he was transported safely to their home outside Santa Cruz.....with the Eddie Vedder song ...... I got the feeling that I just can't lose...pulling into Santa Cruz.....

It was a great day....I pictured Gio pulling into Santa Cruz...the ocean breezes blowing on his beautiful face. He was a symbol for those of us in rescue. We can't save them all, but sometimes we go out on a limb, take a chance, step off the ledge and the universe is there to catch you.

It was rocky at Gio's new foster home. He was there for a few months. They changed his name to Jack and we got him into an opthamology vet who prescribed eye drops and meds that would relieve some of the horrible pain poor Jack had suffered his whole life.

The resident dog, a cattle dog, never liked Gio-Jack and picked a bunch of fights with him. We had nowhere else for him to go and the dogs had to be separated. Amazingly, our Jack never responded to the attacks. He just wanted to be friends with everyone and everything.

Two very nice people, Marisa and Mike, contacted us about Jack. Marisa's dog, Fiona, was very dog selective, but they'd seen Jack and wanted to take a chance. Fiona was all for it and it was instant love. Marisa and Mike fed Fiona a vegan diet and she obviously thrived on it....and so did Jack.

Jack was renamed Carmine and found himself in a very loving home. He got around by following the jingle of Fiona's collar. Marisa, Mike, Carmine and Fiona relocated back east to Connecticut and for the first time, this Southern California boy enjoyed snow and cozy winter life.

Life gets away from you in rescue. There are so many who need us to help them and not enough of us to help.

Carmine enjoyed a loving life, even though he had to wait so long to find his forever home. This year, Carmine passed away in his loving family's arms. He was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor which began to cause him much anxiety and great pain.

He is remembered as an extraordinary dog who brought many people together. He went from being red-lined in LA to the lovely beaches of Santa Cruz and then all the way to the east coast. Everywhere he went, Carmine taught everyone he encountered to enjoy the moment and live each day as if it were our last.

Goodbye, Carmine. I never got to meet you face to fact, but I will someday. I know you are there with my Girl, with Rebel and Junior, Mookie and Madeline, with Hope and Frenchie and all the other Reunion Rescue dogs saving me a place.....pulling into Santa Cruz..... I need the beach to set me free...I need the wind to let me breathe.  I need the water to wash my soul...I need my loved ones to let me go...

Three dumped dogs in Georgia being saved by evicted animal lovers

Helping animals is a daily mission. This story came across our Facebook page and that face reminded me of so many I've been blessed to know.

This one looks so much like Wylie in California who very long ago was 'Sluggo,' a dog we had to take from an abusive situation.

Wylie is now and has been for many years the 'son' of a vegan couple in Vallejo, Todd and Darren. Wylie was very blessed to have been saved by Todd and Darren and is now a cherished senior citizen and beloved member of the family as every companion animal should be.

Please read and share these 'dumped' dogs and their story.

"Liberty County, GA~~ The ladies who have been trying to take care of these DUMPED dogs have both lost their jobs and are being evicted. They have to clear the premises in 2 weeks; therefore, we are I desperate need of foster spaces and funds for these 3 dogs.

The 2 red dogs are mother and daughter and were found living in a drainage pipe... As you can see, their bodies are wrecked with demodectic mange and their eyes are infected. Momma dog is approximately 3 years old, very sweet and smiles with big wrinkles when she approaches or is approached. She is very friendly and gets along with other dogs. She is approximately 45 pounds, medium sized and though she is also suffering from Demodex, it is not an extreme case. We expect her to be heart worm positive. Her daughter also gets along with other dogs but is shy around humans. She does allow for petting and she would easily come out of her shyness in a positive environment; however, her Demodex is extreme and it will take some time to clear up. She is only about a year old; therefore, we are praying that she is heart worm negative or very light positive.

The third dog, Wilbur, just recently showed up on the property and even though the ladies can hardly afford to take care of themselves, they have started taking care of him, too. We believe him to be mixed with Yellow Lab and possibly Bulldog. He is extremely friendly with other dogs and humans alike and we even know him to be fine around cats, as there are several outside cats on the property next door. He appears to be a young adult but we also expect him to be heart worm positive. He is emaciated and full of ticks and scabs - these do not appear to be from dog fights. He is starved not only for food, but also for attention. It's easy to see that he loves feeling a kind hand on his head and back. He is curious and alert, loves water, too."

Donations can be made below and let's try to help Wilbur, and the Momma and daughter find happy homes just like Wylie so many many years ago.

Senior blind rescue dog missing in New York

Nico (a.k.a. Diesel) is missing from his new home. Nico is nine years old and partially blind.

A Facebook page has been started for Nico lost in the town of Shawangunk, Ulster County, New York.

Here is his fundraising link:

"Nico (aka Diesel) is a sweet 9 year old Pit Bull that was rescued at the very last minute from Death Row. On October 24, 2013, Nico wandered away from his new home, a home that is located in rural area and is very unfamiliar to him."

"Nico is partially blind with some health issues. We are desperately trying to raise funds to pay for a canine search and rescue team to help find Nico as well as a community awareness campaign. Please help by donating and sharing this information."

**Please note: All funds raised will be used to help find Nico (aka Diesel) and for any medical care that he might need.  Any funds left over or not used, will be donated the Urgent Care Fund administered by Urgent Part 2 - Urgent Death Row Dogs.

Nico is a 9 yr old male pit bull lost on 10/23/13 in Pine Bush NY. He is about 50 lbs and VERY FRIENDLY.

Waco pup's eye beaten from his head

This sweet dog was impounded at Waco Humane Society after his owner is thought to have beaten him so badly to have caused his eyeball to protrude.

This little one is thought to be about two years of age and is only interested in making new friends. The Waco Humane Society has reached out to local rescues to try and save this sweet boy.

More facts are being sought about the case in hopes that charges will be filed for animal abuse, but for now, the shelter is really trying to find a good home for this deserving dog.

14 pit bulls at San Francisco Animal Control

....but only these two available for adoption:

What will happen to the other 12 dogs which the public never sees?

Even the most overfilled stressed shelters are allowing their dogs to be publicized and networked. Even Lancaster and Devore, some of California's most high kill shelters allow their dogs to be promoted by animal advocates.

Nobody is promoting these dogs in the back rooms of one of the most affluent cities in the country.

What will happen to these dogs?

A1268772 – Chow Corgi – Needs placement by tomorrow at 7 pm.  Hides in back of the cage and growls.  Charges staff when they enter the cage for cleaning/feeding.  There is definitely some type of shorter breed mixed in.  These are the best photos I could get.

A1268876 – Has mammary mass, possibly tumor.  Needs placement with rescue now.  Will likely not
be extended due to medical issue and temperament.  Is not currently set for euthanasia, but could be at any time.

SAN PEDRO CA HARBOR SHELTER

ZOE (A1409944) may be a bit of a long-shot, but saving a life is always worth a shot. She went into the Harbor shelter as a stray on July 19. According to the staff-person I spoke to, she does have behavioral notes: She charges at the cage and barks, and as of a few days ago, they hadn't done a medical exam yet because she was not cooperative. Then again, I have not had the good luck of speaking to particularly helpful staff at this shelter (I know they are there!).
Anyway, ZOE is listed as a 2-year old, 15-pound, unaltered female, white and black Cocker Spaniel mix. She's quite cute, and may just need some patience and understanding, outside of a shelter environment, to thrive.

These two dogs belong to a homeless woman. She is willing to let them go to a rescue or new home. The Humane Society won't take them (she adopted one of them from the HS), and the Haven for Hope won't accept them (even though they have dog kennels).

They are both fixed and the small dog is up-to-date on her shots. The small dog is a JRT mix and the larger pup is 6 months old and is a Great Pyr mix. Please contact me if you can help. I currently have her in a motel for 3 days, but on Tuesday morning, she has to be out and she will have to go to a shelter or stay outside.

Please contact me if you are interested at eunmi38@yahoo.com.

Lilac and Mr. Big from cruelty case:
Lilac

We would really like to have Lilac and Mr. Big placed asap since they have been at BCAC way too long.

Lilac (small, young brindle female): she's young, friendly, happy-go-lucky, likes to carry
Mr. Big
things in her mouth. Her kennel behavior is not good (barking and jumping) but once you open the gate to walk her she becomes wiggly and much calmer. I see no reason she can't get adopted directly from the shelter but if a local rescue wants to pull her that's fine too. Lilac is 1.5 yrs. old and approx. 57 lbs. Imp. No. 000038.Mr. Big (large, fawn male): he's a friendly, great looking big dog, appears to have obedience training and walks well on leash. He loves to lay in the kiddie pool. No behavior issues that I'm aware of. I'm suggesting rescue for him not just because a rescue can do a home check. If someone refers a "good" adopter through the shelter that's fine too. I'd hate for him to be bounced around or end up in another neglectful situation. Mr. Big is 97 lbs. and is approx. 5 yrs. old. Imp. No. 000036.
